For a second year in a row, Americans prepare for Thanksgiving with Covid-19 still around, even increasing in some regions. Sure, getting the vaccine allows for some relaxation of restrictions, but not too much. In fact, it’s still necessary to take preventive measures especially for the unvaccinated and those around them.

Current Situation: Covid still with us.

Covid cases seem to be growing again, especially in colder weather regions. And according to experts, holiday travel could bring more cases. With about 100 million Americans unvaccinated, we should still take preventive measures to protect against the virus.

Thanksgiving in Pandemic is still Thanksgiving.

All this means Americans are facing a second Thanksgiving in pandemic. But after almost two years of restrictions and isolation, Thanksgiving with family becomes even more important this year.

Celebrate Thanksgiving but take precautions.

Whether you’re traveling, celebrating in town at your relatives or hosting Thanksgiving dinner, there are precautions to take. Here are some recommendations by experts, for each of the likely with or without vaccine situations.
  • All family fully vaccinated. The CDCs emphasize the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is getting the full vaccines doses. However, they also recommend that even the fully vaccinated wear a mask indoors, in places with high risk of contagion.
  • All family fully vaccinated but some of them are high risk. Always plan around the most vulnerable, keeping their safety a priority. For example, they should avoid doing the traveling.
  • Adults in the family fully vaccinated but children are not. The best protection for unvaccinated children is for everyone else to get the vaccine.
  • If not all adults in the family are fully vaccinated, they will have to make a decision whether to gather. Most experts advise they could still celebrate, as long as all proper precautions are in place. For instance, CDCs recommend delaying travel until fully vaccinated.

Take precautions, regardless of whether or not you’re vaccinated.

The numbers of breakthrough infections have proven that not even the fully vaccinated are 100% risk free. Here are some precautions everyone should be taking for a happy, safe, and healthy Thanksgiving celebration.
  • If you’re traveling, use a protective mask, like KN95.
  • Taking a rapid test right before traveling or gathering, might take some of the worry and tension away.
  • Make sure there is increased indoor ventilation with fans and open windows. If the weather permits, it’s best to gather outside.
  • Get updated information of Covid cases in your area or in the city you’re traveling to.
  • Anyone with symptoms as light as sniffles, cough or aches, should stay home and avoid contact with others, just in case.
