As Women’s History Month closes, we’re honoring them with our list of 12 Successful Latinas in the United States. At Estafeta USA we respect and admire Latina women for their magical blend of strength, perseverance, love, and creativity. And we’re showcasing all of that here. In our previous post we presented the first part of the list, and now here’s part II.

12 Amazing Latinas in the United States

  1. Patricia Janiot. “On the road, don’t forget the people who matter in your life: your family, your friends, all your loved ones. Don’t forget yourself and your duty to become a better human being.”

Patricia Janiot is a Colombian journalist and former beauty queen. She began her career as a journalist and news presenter in her country. The recognition she got in her native Colombia opened doors for her internationally. Therefore, Janiot went on to become one of the leading journalists and international news anchors at Univision, Telemundo, and CNN. And after decades presenting the news, she is now reference and an example for the Hispanic community.
  1. Eva Longoria. “As a Latina, I want to see more actors who look like me on screen and behind the camera. I opened my own production company to create content from our community. And became a director and producer to have a platform from which to hire people who look like me.”

This director, model, businesswoman, producer and philanthropist was born in Texas. Her rise to stardom came with Gabrielle Solís on the hit series “Desperate Housewives.” Eva Longoria achieved success thanks to her talent and strength, but also her solidarity with peers and loved ones.
  1. Ellen Ochoa. “I tell students that the opportunities I had were the result of having a good academic background. Education is what allows you to stand out.”

Ellen Ochoa made world history as the first Hispanic woman to travel to space. And because of this, NASA awarded her the Exceptional Service Medal and she is in the Astronaut Hall of Fame. She was born in Los Angeles, California, of Mexican origin. Being an outstanding science student, she got accepted to study Physics at Stanford University. A few years later, Ochoa applied to NASA’s Candidates for Astronauts program. And four years later, she made history as the first Hispanic woman to travel to space, with three subsequent missions.
  1. Sofia Vergara. “I’m not afraid of anything, I’m not complaining. Even when horrible things happen to me, I keep going.”

This Colombian from Barranquilla conquered Hollywood with her accent, beauty and charisma in front of the cameras. That winning formula allowed here to go from commercials to starring in movies and series. Of those, one of the most famous is Modern Family which brought her fame and several awards. Indeed, Sofia Vergara has been among the highest paid actresses on television.
  1. Dolores Huerta. “My mother was a dominant force in our family. And I always saw her as the leader. That was great for me as a young woman, because I never saw women having to be dominated by men.”

Dolores Huerta is one of the most important figures in feminism and the farmworker struggle in the United States. She was born in 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico and grew up in California. Years later she became the leader of the leader of the Community Service Organization (CSO). In 1962, with César Chávez, she co-founded the National Association of Agricultural Workers, which became the United Farm Workers (UFW). Dolores Huerta is now 91 and has dedicated her life to the feminist struggle. In California, April 10 is Dolores Huerta Day.
  1. Celia Cruz. “Azúcar!” The queen of Salsa immortalized this word as her signature cry of joy.

She was born in Cuba, where she began her career, and achieved fame as a soloist with the Sonora Matancera. She had to emigrate to Mexico, where she was part of the golden age of Mexican cinema. As a member of Fania All Stars, she took her unique voice throughout Latin America and later to the US. Celia Cruz won multiple awards and will forever be an icon for Latin music. Celia Cruz passed away in 2003, but her songs and passionate spirit live on as a cultural legacy.
